CrossFit Open 17.5 Action Photos

As always, I. Ramirez of Valkyrie Photography has done a beautiful job of capturing the intensity! This was the final WOD of the CrossFit Open 2017, and it was brutal! It was 10 rounds for time of 9 45 lb thrusters and 35 single unders.  I think our photographer caught me at the end of the WOD!

17.5 Scorecard

Yak!!! This was a brutal WOD! My 13:40 finish was pretty for me, doubly so considering I vomited twice during the workout and had a bad coughing episode.  The 45 lb thrusters were the *easy* part, while the single unders were a lot more brutal.  I was very pleased with my time, even if it looks like I may be in the bottom 25% on my time for this particular WOD from the data sampling I took.

Down for Donuts by Valkyrie Photography

As always, I. Ramirez of Valkyrie Photography has done a beautiful job of capturing the intensity of every moment.

WOD 1 involved a 12 minute time cap with the following in scaled female:
 - 15x35 lb overhead squat (squat snatch permitted to initiate a set, easy part)
 - 25x ab-mat sit-ups
 - 35x ring rows (ugggh!!!)
 - 45x26 lb Russian kettlebell swings (easiest part of the WOD)
 - 55x10 lb ball slams
 - 45x26 lb Russian kettlebell swings
 - 35x ring row (not again!)
 - 25x ab-mat sit-ups
 - 15x35 lb overhead squats

Nothing like a 35 lb overhead squat that was initiated by a standard snatch!

And then there was the ball slam... 55 of them!

And the nice, light-weight Russian kettle-bell swing. I think it was only 26 lbs, although 2 sets of 45 reps separated by 55 ball slams was pretty vicious!

The second WOD was my favorite...  hang cleans of any flavor as needed.  I somehow did it all as power cleans, although my clean of choice when I have plenty of time and low reps is the full squat clean.

Looks like I'm already doing my reset for my second lift or my elbows would have been shot out forward.  This was my first and easiest weight - 65 lbs.

From the backside... my final clean at 90 lbs. It felt surprisingly easy.  R. Carmona nicely took a frontal picture of me at 90 lbs.

And the obligatory group picture after the entire event!  Looks like I actually am looking in the right direction!

Troldhaugen Test Run

I'm still significantly below tempo on the faster parts, but this is a rough approximation after spending a while cleaning up a few of the more difficult passages, which include some 5-on-4.

I finally have been able to put together Troldhaugen from Grieg's Lyric Pieces into something remotely coherent! The classroom has been providing with quite a bit of additional solace I haven't been able to get in the absence of the gym or somewhere to actually shoot without having to deal with people in charge who are more intent on extorting others than allowing people to actually train.

CrossFit Open 17.4

The pictures have arrived from Valkyrie Photography. As always, I. Ramirez has done a wonderful job of capturing the moment!

Open WOD 17.4 consisted of the following:
- 55 deadlifts (95 lbs for scaled female)
- 55 wall balls (10 lbs for scaled female)
- 55 calorie row
- 55 hand-release pushups

And if I still had time left after 13 minutes, I kept going as many reps as possible. Alas, I ran out of time prior to completing the first iteration.  I only completed 180 reps - 40 hand-release push-ups short of a complete round. I was surprised I got as far as I did on the hand-release push-ups considering I had about 30 seconds to do them because it took me a while to get my feet out of the rower.

I had a really good judge who kept pushing me forward even if he also kept me extra-honest on the wall balls.  He always has a great way of giving the right cues and prompts to make the next several reps better.

And then after my round and judging a couple of rounds, I also had some fun filming bits and pieces of the action. My regular camera took a dump, so I had to use my phone. A few of these are from Valkyrie Photography, as marked in the corner.  I loved watching my own instructors compete and suck air as well!

I almost forgot something... dug up some old sheet music and went to work on it after Down for Donuts today...

Down for Donuts Hang Power Clean

No question there will be more pictures coming in, but this was my final lift for the last WOD, which was as follows: 30 seconds to complete two successful hang power cleans, 90 seconds to adjust the weight, and then repeat the cycle for a total of three iterations.  I completed the event at 90 lbs knowing that I am more than a bit tender from 17.4 and the preceding workouts, which included a massive chipper and pulling a sled across the parking lot (and catching every single possible obstacle that nobody else seemed to catch).

The 90 lb hang clean felt surprisingly easy, but I knew better than to go too much past my original plan to max out at 85 lbs because my score was based on my highest successful lift.

Installation 3 of 17.3

And the picture does arrive! I didn't get photographed too well because the photographer understandably does NOT want to wear vomit or get farted on, and my second attempt was while the photographer was out of commission (she does have a life!).  As always, where quantity was lacking, the quality was there!

Thus far, my standing within the box isn't too horrible, especially after correcting for me being in the Masters age group.  The second WOD hurt my standings significantly, but I think I came back a bit after the third WOD... or perhaps the first WOD boosted my standings a fair amount.  I'm looking forward to 17.4!

As of last check today, I am holding 114th or 115th place out of somewhere between 400 and 500 in the Scaled Female 35-39 Master's division in Florida, which isn't too shabby.  I'm hoping to eventually go into Rx knowing that the WODs will be much, much harder, although chest to bar pullups, toes to bars, muscle ups, rope climbs, double unders, and all things handstand flavor are still in early development.

Installation 2 of 17.3

I redid 17.3 because I decided that 61 reps total was a bit low for me.  It was well worth the re-do with the 43 rep gain to get to 104, which almost finished me with the 65 lb weight.  I probably could have gotten to the round of 75 lb snatches, but I was happy with being able to keep control of the bar and maintaining solid form instead of extra sloppy snatches.

Having a second breakfast with my fellow competitor... Hobbits unite! I think the coach had some fun watching the two of us fumble around with extra equipment to make sure we could reach the pull up bar.

Installation 1 of 17.3

Sometimes we can't help but get a good giggle about the amazing lift known as the snatch...

Most of my other pictures and videos got mangled courtesy of a spastic camera, but I did have a few decent ones that did come out.

Getting SN-2'ed by 17.2

I didn't get my chin over the bar, although I did come close a few times.  I literally had 7.5 minutes of pull up and chin up attempts after 2 rounds of 50' of weighted lunges (one pair of 20 lb dumbbells), 16 hanging knee raises, 8 dumb bell power cleans, and another 50' of weighted lunges.
